What is DirtSkill?
DirtSkill is our skill learning programme for Primary, Intermediate and Highschool students. We take pride in delivering skill development opportunities in a safe, fun and supportive environment.
Is DirtSkill right for my child?
DirtSkill is not for everyone, but the best way to find out if it is for your child is to come along to one of our free open evenings, meet some of the coaches and try it out.
What does my child learn at DirtSkill?
We have over 100 unique session plans for your child to progress through. Each of these have been crafted over the years to develop accountable, calculated and efficient riders. Skills involved range from real basics like safety checks, changing gears, cornering, braking, how to crash, learning flow, pumping, manuals and that’s just scratching the surface. Our priority is always safety, followed by enjoyment, then progression.
Who are the coaches?
Our coaches are experienced riders in their own right, with a myriad of experiences, passions and skills . We ensure to select coaches to deliver sessions that are passionate about helping others, sharing their skills, and want to grow our awesome sport. All coach training comes from Tristan.
Our head coach credentials include UCI Level 2 Coach Certificate, along with a Bachelor of Sport & Recreation, and coaching experience in Mountain Biking that stretches back to 2016. A lot our coaching philosophy aligns with Cycling New Zealand along with a completed CNZ accreditation.
Tristan also holds UCI Level 1 Mechanics Certificate. Along with this the experience of competing across the world at high level Cross Country, Enduro, Endurance and Stage racing events. Some of the result highlights this far include U23 24 hour World Champion, Bronze Oceania Cycling Champs XCE Elite Men, National U23 24 hour Champ, 2x Top 5 elite placings at Whaka 100, New Zealand Single Speed Champ and BC Bike Race 9th Place Elite Men.
At the end of the day, what’s important is the passion to teach. We’ll leave it up to you to see that radiate from our coaches.

What is Adult Skills?
Adult Skills is our skill learning programme for riders 18+. We take pride in delivering skill development opportunities in a safe, fun and supportive environment.
Is Adult Skills right for me?
Adult Skills is not for everyone, but the best way to find out if it is for you is to have a through read through the website and have a think if you want diverse coaching session plans or just to target one thing. For example, if you really just want to get better at cornering it could be worth just looking at a Private lesson.
What will I learn in Adult Skills?
We have over 50 unique session plans for you to progress through. Each of these have been crafted over the years to develop accountable, calculated and efficient riders. Skills involved range from real basics like safety checks, changing gears, cornering, braking, how to crash, learning flow, pumping, manuals and that’s just scratching the surface. Our priority is always safety, followed by enjoyment, then progression.

Private Coaching FAQ
What is Private Coaching?
Private coaching sessions are customised sessions for your needs. We can offer sessions for children or adults. It doesn’t matter if you want to go on your own or in a group we can tailor a session to your needs. These sessions are based at Oropi, Summerhill or maybe Whakarewarewa forest on request.
Who takes the private coaching sessions?
We currently have two coaches that could take your private session. Tristan and Coralie have a wide range of experiences any we’re more than happy to go the extra mile to help you progress towards your goals.
How do I book a private session?
You can book private sessions by emailing Tristan at tristanhride@gmail.com. Be sure to include the following information: Requested location, requested time, requested coach, group size session time, some information about your abilities, bike and what you are wanting to learn.
Registration FAQ
Remember if you have registered with DirtCraft before you’ve already got an account. That means you can just sign in at the top of the page and from there you can register for your programme or event.
What to bring? FAQ
When coming to a session make sure you have your bike in good functioning condition to meet the demands of the session. Tyres pumped up, bolts tightened, chain lubed. You’ll need a helmet, safe covered in footwear or MTB shoes. I positive attitude and open mind go a long way!
Bike Purchasing FAQ
If you want more information about the bike purchasing process, what to get, where to shop, what to avoid, etc. contact Tristan and arrange a consultation. tristanhride@gmail.com. You aren’t the first person to make mistakes. Why not learn from others and save some money in the long run…?
Running Late or Absence FAQ
Please let your coach know at least 10 minutes prior to your session starting if you think you are going to be late or absent. You can do this via the Heja app.
Racing FAQ
If you want more information about which events to target the best thing to do is contact Tristan and arrange a consultation. tristanhride@gmail.com. New Zealand alone has a huge range of events. But where to spend your money can be daunting. Get in touch so we can point you in the right direction.
